Getting to Naples or Sorry, We Are Dumb Tourists

The original plan was that Lorenzo would drive down with us on Tuesday morning and we would all spend the night there. The night before, he ended up having an appointment so we were going to take the train. We got up early and got on the bus to get to the metro to get to the train station (we didn’t know that there was a bus directly to the train station). Our train was at 1030 and we got on the bus at 9. There was a ton of traffic so it took us an hour to get to the subway. When we got into the subway, there were quite a lot of announcements but they were in Italian so we couldn’t understand them. We got on the subway car and all seemed to be ok…we might even make the train. Then there is another announcement and almost everyone gets off the car we are in. But two people were still on the train so we stayed on. Just as the doors were closing, Morgan sees a guy on the platform across the way waving his arms in a “get off the train you are not supposed to be on there” manner. We then realize that both of the other two people on the car with us are crazy. One is a homeless man (obviously crazy) and the other is a perfectly normal looking woman who is having a conversation with the homeless man (less obvious but still crazy). So the train moves and Morgan says, “please let us get to another station….nope, nope, not making it to another station”. The train stops mid-tunnel. The doors open. What the...? We peek our heads out and the conductor is walking down the emergency walkway in the tunnel and immediately upon seeing us starts yelling in Italian. I imagine it goes something like this, “What the hell are you doing on the train? I told you to get off at the last stop. We are in the middle of the tunnel. What am I suppose to do with you?” We apologize explaining that we don’t speak Italian. He then proceeds to yell at the sane-looking-crazy lady for a while before telling us to get back in the car (at least that’s what I took from his signaling) and driving us back to the station. So, that didn’t work and we have now officially missed our train. We find a guy who speaks English (thank God) and he tells us that there is a problem with the trains and that they are only making limited stops. He tells us where to get a bus and we head out. At the bus stop we overhear a couple asking to go to Termini (that is the train station) so we say “termini!” and motion if it’s ok that we follow them. We get to the packed bus stop and watch 3 buses go by too full to fit anymore before we get on one. The couple are so nice and literally help hug us into the bus. I am getting pretty frustrated but trying to see the humor in the situation. I say to Morgan "you know, we are in the middle of a blog story". We get to the transfer point and there is no listing on the sign for Termini and I am done so we take a cab. We tried to convince the couple to come with us (that we were paying anyway and there was room) but they refused. When we got to the station, we had just missed the train and I lost it. Sometimes traveling can be so frustrating there is nothing you can do but take a break to eat pasta…which we did.
